Erm,i was a bit drunk at this one because we didn’t manage to see the gig around the corner at The royal centre!! What? You’re saying?? Around this era, Rock city gigs ran real late, often the headline act wouldnt be onstage till 11.30pm. If there was a gig at the Royal centre, opposite,it was possible to see 2 gigs in one night! We were due to see JULIAN COPE at the centre. He cancelled, so we HAD TO got to the pub for next few hours..he he hick (We never did manage to do the two gigs in one night. The closest we got was this one or when we saw Siouxie & royal centre, The Cult were playing Rock city. Unfortunately, there was only one ticket left for Cult, so we left.>

OZZY didn’t do this show. The support band did their set, then there was a LONG wait before OZZY was due on. Eventually,it was announced over the pa that “Ozzy is in his hotel room & refuses to leave”.” The show is cancelled & refunds are available”. All hell broke lose. The stage equipment was trashed & police with dogs were called in!! Very crazy night….

The Primitives, Goodbye Mr Mackenzie, @ Rock City,Nottingham, 3-5-88
At the time, The Primitives had a big hit called “Crash”. I think their set was rather short as they’d only released one album. I knew of “Goodbye Mr Mackenzie” due to a single ” The Rattler”. I nicknamed a mate i worked with, called Simon, “The Rattling Boy”, which was part of the lyrics to the song. Unknown to me at the time, i was quite lucky to have seen “Goodbye Mr Mackenzie”, as Shirley Manson would eventually become part of “Garbage”. She also played in “Angelfish”. Somewhere along the line, i got a bunch of American radio promos. One was from ” Radioactive records” of various bands. I quite liked the Angelfish song on there & eventually bought their album from a shop in Nottingham, called “Way Ahead” for £15.95″ (at the time, that was quite expensive)
UPDATE : The Radioactive Records” sampler CD, i gave to my mate Rob 🙂
